Neurosonic at day activity centre Misteli: finding peace in a busy day

Day activity centre Misteli serves adult clients with intellectual disabilities. The day is full of activity and togetherness. The sound environment can be lively. Finding one's own peace is not a given.

The Neurosonic Professional chair has been in use at the unit since 2015. Currently 18 clients use it regularly. Some use the chair completely independently: selecting a program from the tablet, settling into the chair, pulling a blanket over themselves and coming out at their own pace. Some need a little assistance. The relaxation program starts at lower intensities and is adjusted individually over time.

Clients keep track of their own turns. That says something essential.

The effects are visible in concrete terms. A restless client who cannot calm down by any other means always goes to the chair when asked. Twenty minutes later they come out calm, smiling, ready to join the shared activity or take on their own task. Staff can in the meantime focus on the other clients.

"Neurosonic is a truly important relaxation method and opportunity for our clients", says social counsellor Reija Alatalo.

Neurosonic is a non-pharmacological support for nervous system regulation.
