Neurosonic mattress to support mental health in Satakunta Psychiatry

The Neurosonic mattress has attracted widespread interest as a support for different forms of treatment. This year, the psychiatry stabilization work group of the Satakunta welfare area tested the use of the Neurosonic mattress as part of their treatment. Based on the test report, the experiences were very positive, and the use of the mattress was perceived as useful, especially in supporting emotional regulation and relaxation.

Neurosonic testing in the stabilization work group of psychiatry

In the stabilization work group, young adults with emotional regulation challenges are treated in particular. During the test period that lasted from January to May 2024, 26 customers used the Neurosonic mattress in individual and group meetings. The aim of the testing was to find out how well the mattress helped in managing emotions and relaxing.

Using a mattress to support emotional regulation

The Neurosonic mattress was used at the beginning or end of meetings, depending on the client's state of alertness. For example, the mattress activation program for underactive customers helped to make them more present in conversations. Correspondingly, at the end of meetings, the mattress helped to calm down, if stressful topics were discussed in the meeting. Several customers used the mattress regularly and reported that relaxation was easier during long sessions.

One of the customers described his experience like this: "I have never been so relaxed." This highlights the mattress's potential to bring to life for the first time a real experience of stress relief.

User experiences and feedback

Customer feedback was mostly positive. Caregivers and customers felt that the mattress's program selection was sufficient for various needs. In particular, music as part of the exercise was felt to be important because it helped focus and calmed the mind.

Experiences of psychiatry staff

Nursing staff also benefited from using the Neurosonic mattress. After a busy day, relaxing on the mattress helped to recover from stress, which improved coping. This underlines the potential of the mattress to support occupational well-being in a psychiatric care environment.

Neurosonic – for treatment support and well-being at work

Based on the test period, the Neurosonic mattress was perfectly suited for use by the stabilization work group. With the help of the mattress, the clients relaxed and were more receptive to the rest of the treatment. Although the portability of the mattress was perceived as useful, constant moving can be tiring. In these cases, a divan or a chair could be viable options.

The use of the Neurosonic mattress should be flexible and easily accessible, especially in units where the need for it may appear suddenly. In the future, it would also be interesting to study the staff's experiences of using a mattress to support work well-being.
